For far too long, people have had to endure the excruciating pain of passing kidney stones that are too small to laser or surgically remove.
Our team of scientific collaborators discovered an active molecule, derived from the leaf of a plant which breaks up calcium oxalate kidney stones, the most common type of kidney stone. This treatment will be the first of its kind and is currently in development.
The discovery occurred at the University of Western in collaboration with the University of Guelph. Isolated molecules were tested for effect on breaking down calcium oxalate kidney stones, our molecule was discovered to break down at an unprecedented rate. This molecule and it's mechanism of action was then tested in a in vitro model which also showed efficacious effects on breaking down kidney stones while in the kidney.
This model was then applied to further preclinical studies where again, our molecule was shown to break down calcium oxalate kidney stones in the kidney.
A human safety trial has been approved by Health Canada and is set to conclude in 2019. Following a successful dose escalating safety study, SP Nutra will be conducting a multi-site efficacy study to measure the effect on kidney stones in humans.
We expect to launch our kidney stone treatment in the fall of 2019 and look forward to improving the lives and health of people suffering from kidney stones.
